The instant I saw the skull (in this video, as it's been many years since I've watched this movie) I absolutely knew it was a baboon skull. Baboons have scary looking canines primarily used for intimidation, but the rest of their teeth look more like humans. Lions do eat baboons, especially little ones as they have no way to defend themselves against large predators. So, I agree with MatPat.

I was right on first glance I thought it looked like a baboon skull the whole time. I have taken a biological anthropology course and lab before so I was taught quite a bit about primate and ancestral hominid skulls/fossils. Plus I know felines and knew the length of jaw was too long and not the right teeth.
